Gerard de Kremer (1512 - 1594), known by his Latin name Gerardus Mercator, was a Flemish mathematician, geographer and cartographer, the inventor of the map projection that bears his name.
In 1935, the International Astronomical Union named a lunar crater after him, and later asteroid 4798.
