Description
"Thinking Monkey" Statuette
Porcelain, glazed.
Denmark, Bing & Grøndahl, first half of the 20th century.
Height: 13 cm.
Condition: excellent preservation.
A small porcelain figure depicting a monkey seated in a thoughtful pose. The composition immediately evokes a variation on the theme of The Thinker, transposed into a more intimate and observant register.
Materials and techniques
Smooth, slightly translucent glazed porcelain. The soft modeling is complemented by subtle surface nuances, giving the form a vibrant presence without an overload of detail.
Dating and historical context
In the first half of the 20th century, Bing & Grøndahl developed a language specific to Scandinavian sculpture: restraint of gesture, attention to naturalism, and balance of volumes. Their figures exist at the boundary between decorative object and cabinet sculpture.
Artistic characteristics
The posture—head resting on the hand, gaze focused—is reminiscent of Auguste Rodin's Thinker, but without its monumentality or dramatic tension. The effect here is more muted, almost ironic. The figure of the monkey accentuates this contrast, between imitation of a human and a natural distance.
Decorative presence and use
The statuette acts as a point of intellectual focus. Modest in size, it captures the eye through the accuracy of its posture and the singularity of its image.
Collectible value
Bing & Grøndahl pieces are sought after for the quality of their porcelain and their distinctive formal language. This example stands out for its subtle interpretation of a classic motif and its excellent condition, which enhances its value within a collection of 20th-century European sculpture.
