Pavel (Paolo) Troubetzkoy occupies a unique place in the history of European sculpture. Born in Italy into the renowned princely Troubetzkoy family, and active in Milan, Paris, Saint Petersburg, and later the United States, he was one of the leading figures of Impressionist sculpture. In contrast to academicism, he sought to capture movement, light, and the immediate impression of life. This free and vibrant approach to shaping matter became the hallmark of his work.
The sculpture depicts a ulana of the Savoy cavalry, one of the most prestigious corps in the army of the Kingdom of Italy at the end of the 19th century. The rider appears in a calm and confident pose, while the entire composition is imbued with an inner sense of movement. Troubetzkoy eschews anecdotal details in favor of a broad and spontaneous modeling, where the interplay of light on the bronze constantly brings the surface to life.
The work has an exemplary attribution. It bears the signature of Paolo Troubetzkoy as well as that of the Milanese founder A. Robecchi, both dated 1898. The combination of these two signatures and this precise dating considerably enhances its historical interest and its collector's value.
"Oulan of Savoy" belongs to Troubetzkoy's artistic maturity, when his visual language was already fully established. This sculpture brings together all the qualities that make his work famous today: an exceptional mastery of bronze, a remarkable sense of movement, and the ability to create, with just a few sculptural accents, a figure of rare presence and intensity.
