Description
Engraved Nautilus shells, New Caledonia, 1870-1880.
The largest one measures 16 x 13 cm.
In excellent condition.

These engravings are believed to be the work of one of the exiles or prisoners of the fortress of New Caledonia, made in the years 1870-1880 (after the defeat of the Paris Commune, there were many Communards among the exiles).
Note: Nautilus shells are the emblem of New Caledonia, one of France's overseas territories (since 1853).
