Description
Engraved Nautilus shells, New Caledonia, 1870-1880.
Size of largest 16 x 13 cm.
In excellent condition.
Weight: 0.290 kg
These engravings are thought to be the work of one of the exiles or prisoners of the New Caledonian fortress, created between 1870 and 1880 (after the defeat of the Paris Commune, there were many Communards among the exiles).
Note: Nautilus shells are the emblem of New Caledonia, one of France's overseas territories (since 1853).
