These engravings are said to have been made by one of the exiles or prisoners of the fortress of New Caledonia in the years 1870-1880 (after the defeat of the Paris Commune, there were many communards among the exiles).
Remark: The Nautilus shells are the emblem of New Caledonia, one of France's overseas territories (since 1853).
